ALEGRE is a substance abuse pre-treatment program that seeks to intervene in the lives of women of color actively smoking crack or cocaine. A collaboration with University of Colorado Health Sciences Center Division of Substance Dependence, The Empowerment Program and SISTERS. All ALEGRE services are completely confidential.

The women create art as a way to discover their strengths and express their inner thoughts. A case manager assists participants with housing, food, clothes, treatment access and other services. Weekly groups serve a dual purpose–to guide participant through our health curriculum and “stages of change”, and to provide a safe place for women to develop friendships that support recovery.

ALEGRE is working in conjunction with RAAP (Rape Assistance and Awareness Program) to provide women who have been sexually assaulted with support.

Mind. ALEGRE participants openly discuss the issues facing them and learn harm reduction techniques like detox methods to help them reduce or stop smoking crack so they can start working toward their personal goals and dreams.

Body. Dealing with stress, avoiding abuse and violence, and taking care of your body form the core of ALEGRE activities.

Spirit. Instead of focusing on deficits, SISTERS helps these women discover their strengths through group discussions and art to develop strength-based management skills they can put to work for themselves and their families
