Jen finds strength in the sisterhood of Comadres, where she finds the inspiration to educate the community about HIV/AIDS prevention and mentor other HIV-positive women to stay healthy and be smart. Comadres offers a safe haven for HIV-positive Latinas, who are confronted with cultural stigma while juggling the care of multigenerational families and survival. The program is funded through a grant from the U.S. Ryan White Title I MAI Initiative through the Mayor’s Office of HIV Resources. A client advocacy
program, Comadres provides translation, transportation, health care connections,
resource assistance and mental health services in collaboration with El
Centro de las Familias/Mental Health Corp of Denver. Mind. Latinas living with HIV learn not only how to care for themselves and their disease, but also how to teach others about HIV and its prevention. Body. A client advocacy program, Comadres provides not only health care connections, but also translation and transportation in accessing crucial care. Spirit. The support group provides a place where women can build relationships with other women struggling with HIV/AIDS, becoming comadres to each other, both offering and receiving advice and acceptance.
